How to Capture UTM Parameters on Form Submissions

Learn how to capture and validate UTM source, medium, campaign, and other attribution values on every form submission.

Why UTM Capture Matters

UTM parameters connect each form submission to the campaign that generated it, so you can optimize paid and organic acquisition with confidence.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Use Tagged Campaign URLs

  • Build campaign links with UTM parameters such as utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign.
  • Use consistent naming conventions across channels.

2. Send Traffic to a Page with Your Form

  • Ensure the landing page includes your embedded DigitalPilot form.
  • Confirm the DigitalPilot tracking tag is installed on that page.

3. Test and Validate Submission Data

  • Open the tagged URL in a private browser session.
  • Submit the form once.
  • Check Lead Center and relevant reports for captured attribution values.

Validation Checklist

  • Campaign values are captured exactly as sent in the URL.
  • Case and spelling are consistent across campaigns.
  • Direct traffic tests do not override campaign-tagged tests.

Common Mistakes

  • Using different naming formats for the same campaign.
  • Testing from cached sessions without clearing cookies/storage.
  • Using landing pages where the tracking tag is missing.
